Registered Childminders

Many registered childminders like working term time only as it enables them to spend time solely with their own children during school holiday times. Others like to take on extra term time only work as it means that they can earn extra money whilst their children are at school and have fewer children to care for with their own during school holiday times.

Registered childminders are professional day carers who work in their own homes to provide care and education for other people’s children in a family, home-from-home setting. Childminders are usually parents so may also care for their own children.

Childminders may care for a maximum of six children under the age of eight. No more than three of them should be under five years old and only one under 12 months.

Childminders have to be registered and inspected by the appropriate authority:

In Scotland by SCSWIS

In Wales by CSSIW

Childminders are legally required to follow the 2014 EYFS and have completed a local authority approved training course. They must carry public liability insurance and have suitable business insurance for their car if they use it for their minded children. Many childminders, nannies and nurseries provide term time only childcare. Many childminders and nannies like working like this way as it enables them to spend time solely, with their own children, during school holiday times. Others like to take on extra term time only work as it means that they can earn extra money whilst their children are at school and have fewer children to care for with their own during school holiday times.

Lots of nurseries close during school holidays and therefore do not charge, so this is another good option for teachers with children.

All term time only childcare providers have different ways of charging for this type of care.

It is not uncommon for some to charge half fee during Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays and full fee for all half term holidays.

Some are happy to charge their usual rate during term time only but some may charge slightly more to compensate for their loss of earnings during the school holidays. Some may charge a retainer fee during school holidays in order to keep the space open for term time, but when accepting this they should be prepared to work during these times if required. This must however be agreed in advance and the extra payment made for the hours used.

You might however be lucky enough to find someone who will not charge at all in the school holidays as they enjoy spending time solely with their own children or are simply not open for business.

It is all about finding someone who has mutual requirements.

When it comes to payment for term time only childcare it often works well for both parties involved to calculate a typical year and divide it into regular weekly or monthly payment amounts.  This way the childcare provider, particularly childminders and nannies, will not go without being payed for many weeks at a time. The parent also knows where they are financially as teachers often get payed this way too.

If the contract is terminated before the year ends you will need to re-calculate to make sure that payment amount is correct.
